June 19 - Cajamarca

Cathedral in Cajamarca. Note that it doesn´t have the classic bell tower. At the time of its construction, the Spanish Crown charged a special tax on churches with bell towers so this one was built without one.

The Inca building, the only surviving one in Cajamarca, where Atahualpa was held by Pizzaro and eventually killed.

Cajamarca

Area of Cumibaia, an hour´s drive out of Cajamarca, where there are some curious rock carvings and a very early irrigation canal carved out of solid rock. The canal supposedly was constructed 1000 BC.

The canal.

The canal´s course on the right.

A right angle curve in the canal done, supposedly, to slow down the flow of water.

Lunch here was great.

Our hotel.

The Inca´s seat carved out of solid rock overlooking the city.

A church found on a side street.
