June 11 - Chachapoyas, Levanto and Yalap Ruins

We took a very comfortable overnight bus from Chiclayo to Chachapoyas leaving at 8PM and arriving here at 6AM. We were met by our guide, Alicia, and our driver, Wilder and took off for Levanto, a very early Spanish town. To our surprise, we found the road blocked by a cardboard and wood representation of the Chachapoyas walls. It was manned by drunk locals who had been celebrating a local festival. Unable to disturb the revelers, we tried to go around the blockade and almost got stuck. Finally we arrived at our hotel, a version of the Chachapoyas houses.

The church in Levanto was a very charming adobe and tile work.

After a siesta in the hotel and a delicious home cooked Peruvian style meal, we set off for the Yalap ruins.
Worrying that we might have bitten off more that we could chew, we started up a steep slope to the ruins 300 to 400 yards above us.

We found numerous Chachapoyas eyes on this huge site covered with trees, brush etc.

David´s knees held up well but we were happy to get back to the hotel for another delicious meal and bed at 9:00PM, exhaused.
